swipr is a toolset that allows Information Architects to create an integrated and interactive deliverable from standard Visio files.

A large number of IA's already use Microsoft Visio to create (some of) their deliverables, such as screenflows, sitemaps and wireframes. Communicating these deliverables to clients, developers and other interested parties is always hampered by the fact that the relation between the sitemap/screenflow and the wireframe is normally only based on naming conventions. From the independent stacks of paper for the different deliverables, it is hard for the client to visualise what the actual website or application is going to look like.

Integrating these deliverables into one navigable set of HTML documents facilitates the communication of the deliverables. By letting the client click through the sitemap and see each wireframe in the map helps their understanding of the order in which the wireframes are displayed in the application or website. By also allowing links within the wireframes, the IA can now easily create a low-fi prototype from their wireframes.

To see what this means, check out the swipr output examples.

During the Euro IA Summit (30 Sep - 1 Oct 2006 in Berlin), swipr was officially released. It is available for download from this site for free. Swipr is released under the GNU open source license, which means that you can edit and redistribute the whole toolset, as long as it is under the same GNU open source license.

I have decided to create a blog, so users can be kept up-to-date about the development of swipr. The plan is to inform you about new versions of swipr, as they come available. Next to that, I'm planning to publish some tips and tricks on the blog aswell. The forum shoudl still serve as your main point of reference when you're experiencing problems, but for common problems, I might write a blog article so everybody is aware of the problem and its solution.

Hopefully, I'll also be able to showcase some real-life examples of what people are using swipr for. If you have any examples you'd like to show, please contact me and we'll work together to create a blog post for it.

So, without further ado: swipr.blogspot.com.
